Power of Positivity

By  |

Yin and Yang

Does watching the news fill you with despair? I have to be honest. These days, it does for me. Good and evil, positivity and negativity, unfortunately we can’t have one without the other. Good and evil are alive in all of us.

Domino Effect

There’s a saying, evil breeds evil. What does that mean? One evil act leads to another. The word evil, may make you think of murder. It doesn’t always come in such a severe form though. Envy, bullying and fighting, are just a few by-products of evil that have led to murder and other nasty things. Hence the phrase, evil breeds evil.

So the question is, does good then breed good? I like to believe it does. A small act of kindness can go a long way. Whether it’s a smile, compliment, helping hand, donation, etc… It can change things.

One Simple Act

It makes me think of a story I heard about a young boy. He was walking home from school one day with all of his books. One of his classmates was walking by when he witnessed another group of boys push him down. The boy that was walking by made the decision to turn around and help the boy pick the books up. He went a step farther and carried them all home for him. With a kind smile, they parted ways but that day kicked off a lifelong friendship. It wasn’t until years later that the boy who had been bullied, shared something HUGE. He had all of his books with him that day because he planned on taking his own life that night. He had cleaned out his locker to save his mom from having to do it. The boy who helped him pick up the books, saved his life without even knowing he was doing so. That small act changed everything.

You Choose

The point I’m trying to make is that the society that we’re living in, is plagued with evil and negativity. We’re all capable of shining a light, reaching out a helping hand, promoting positivity instead of negativity. It’s a decision that we must make every day, multiple times per day. Every time there’s another horrifying story on the news we ask the question, “Why do things like this keep happening?” The answer is actually quite simple. They happen because we let them. We continuously let the evil in. The problem is evil. If you’re a believer in God you know that God is good. Evil is an absence of good, an absence of God. It’s also an absence of kindness, love and positivity.

Positivity wins

This week, I challenge you to smile at someone who’s not. Give a compliment when you’d normally say nothing. If you were going to say something hurtful, don’t say anything at all. As controversial as it seems to be these days, pray for someone. Pray for someone who has wronged you. Make a donation. Lend a helping hand. Shine the light in a world filled with so much darkness. YOU have the power to choose, good versus evil, negativity versus positivity. YOU have the power to change everything.

There’s a Reason for Everything

*** I just have to share this… I’m not big on coincidence. I believe everything happens for a reason. First, after writing half of this post yesterday morning I was on Facebook. One of my friends shared a verse (Matthew 5:14) on a graphic that said, “It’s a dark world, be the light.” Okay, so if that’s not special enough… I have another one for you. Yesterday afternoon, as I was finishing this post up, I got my daily bible verse in my email from faithbyverse.com Does anyone have a guess as to which verse it was? It was Romans 12:21 which says, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” I can’t make this stuff up. Did you get goosebumps too?***
